What is a custom shed?

A custom shed is a steel-framed building designed around the way you actually use the space, not pulled off a three-size shelf. Most are clad in Colorbond® and built from 100% Australian-made BlueScope steel, engineered to AS/NZS 1170.2 wind loading for your region. Width, length, eave height, roof pitch, door type, lean-tos, mezzanines, lining and insulation all flex around what's going inside.

Shed styles and what they suit

• Shed kits. Flat-packed, engineered, delivered to your slab. Best when you've got the time, a couple of mates, and a clear set of specs. Often the cheapest path to a turnkey shed.
• Garden sheds. Small footprint, residential block, lawn gear and tools. Most slip under council exempt-development thresholds when sized and sited correctly.
• Workshop sheds. Tall eaves, three-phase ready, lined and insulated, room for a hoist, a bench and a mezzanine office. The serious-tinkerer build.
• Man caves. Fit-out shed for the project car, the bar, the pool table, the Friday-night radio. Aesthetics matter, so does insulation.
• She sheds. Studio, sewing room, plant nursery, yoga space, side-business HQ. Light, lined and lovely.
• Sheds with mezzanine. Second floor for storage, office or sleeping loft. Higher centre clearance and deeper engineering.
• Sheds with solar. Roof pitch and orientation tuned for a PV array, often with a battery bank for off-grid blocks.
• Boat sheds. Wide bay openings, tall doors, lockable, often near salt water so cladding choice matters.
• Caravan sheds. 3.0m wide by 3.0m high doors, 3.4m to 3.6m eave height, 7m to 8m internal length to clear a 6 metre van.
• Campervan sheds. Slightly leaner than caravan storage, often paired with a workshop bay for the rig fit-out.

• Skillion roof sheds. Single-pitch roof, modern profile, useful under height-restricted overlays.

Choosing the right shed for your block

Three questions sort most of it.

What's going inside? A push mower needs different clearance to a 4WD with roof racks. A drum kit needs different lining to a stack of fertiliser bags. List the gear, the people and the activity before you size the shed.

What does the block allow? Setbacks, height limits, overlays, easements and local planning instruments shape what you can build before you even open the designer. Most residential sheds in Australia are non-habitable Class 10a structures under the National Construction Code, which generally keeps approval simpler than a habitable build (Australian Building Codes Board, NCC 2025, Volume 2). State exempt-development thresholds vary, so always check your local council before pouring the slab.

What's the wind region? Australia spans wind regions A through D under AS/NZS 1170.2, and a shed engineered for Sydney suburbia is a different build to one engineered for Far North Queensland. ShedSafe accredited designs lock the engineering to your region from the start.
