About Basalt

What is Basalt?

Basalt is a deep, near-black charcoal from the Colorbond® steel range with a warmer undertone than Monument. Where Monument leans cool grey, Basalt carries a subtle brown-charcoal warmth that sits well alongside natural materials like timber, stone, and copper. It's one of the newer architectural additions to the dark end of the palette.

Why Basalt works

Basalt anchors a building without going cold. It has a solar absorptance of 0.67 (BlueScope SteelSelect data), so like any dark colour it runs hotter than lights and insulation matters more on a Basalt shed (worth raising R-value with your dealer at design stage). The finish is sharp and contemporary, and it sits well against light stone, Spotted Gum cladding, and warmer concrete tones. Basalt is a common alternative to Monument when the build sits among bushland, sandstone, or natural masonry.

Garages and modern sheds designed in Basalt

Basalt suits buyers who want modern without going industrial. Typical pairings:

Colours that pair with Basalt

For roof and trim, Basalt pairs cleanly with Surfmist (high-contrast modern), Dover White (the crispest white pairing), Dune (warm light contrast that picks up Basalt's brown undertone), and Shale Grey (low-contrast tonal pairing).

Why Colorbond® steel?

Every Basalt wall and roof sheet on a ShedDesigner build is 100% Australian-made BlueScope Colorbond® steel, rolled to AS 1397 and backed by a BlueScope warranty of up to 15 years against corrosion to perforation for shed and garage applications (check your build on BlueScope's warranty estimator). The configurator sends your finished design to ShedSafe accredited dealers for quoting: one design, multiple quotes.
