How to choose the right shed size for your property
A practical guide to selecting the right shed dimensions based on your land, council requirements, and what you plan to store or build.
Choosing the right shed size is one of the most important decisions you’ll make before getting a quote. Go too small and you’ll outgrow it within a year. Go too large and you may run into council setback issues or spend more than you need.
Here’s how to get it right:
Start with what you need to fit
Before thinking about dimensions, list everything that needs to go inside. Common uses include:
- Vehicle storage: Cars, utes, trailers, boats, caravans
- Workshop space: Benches, tools, machinery clearance
- General storage: Seasonal gear, farm equipment, hay
- Business use: Stock, packaging, workspace for trades
Allow at least 1 metre of clearance around large items like vehicles and machinery. You’ll thank yourself later.
Check your council requirements
Every council has different rules around setbacks, height limits, and maximum building footprint. Before locking in a size:
- Check your local development plan or zoning rules
- Look at setback requirements from boundaries and other structures
- Confirm whether you need a development application (DA) or can go exempt
Your shed dealer can usually help with this, but it’s worth doing your own homework first.
Use the 3D designer to test sizes
Our shed design tool lets you adjust height, width, and length in real time. Try a few different configurations to see how they look and what fits your block. You can save multiple designs and compare quotes side by side.
Think ahead
If there’s any chance you’ll need more space in 2-3 years, factor that in now. It’s far cheaper to build bigger upfront than to extend later. Adding an extra bay or increasing the length by a few metres can make a huge difference.
