5 things to check before getting a shed quote

Save time and get more accurate quotes by preparing these five things before you request pricing on your steel building.

Getting a shed quote is free and easy with Shed Designer, but a little preparation goes a long way. The more detail you provide upfront, the faster and more accurate your quotes will be.

Here are five things to sort before you hit the quote button.

1. Know your site address

Your shed dealer needs your exact site address to calculate wind loading, terrain category, and snow loading (if applicable). These factors directly affect the engineering and cost of your building. A rough suburb isn’t enough. Provide the actual lot address where the shed will be built.

2. Have your dimensions ready

At minimum, know your:

  • Span (width from wall to wall)
  • Length (front to back)
  • Wall height (from slab to the underside of the gutter)

If you’re not sure, use the 3D design tool to experiment with different sizes and see how they look.

3. Decide on doors and openings

Roller doors, PA doors, sliding doors, open bays: each type affects the structure and cost. Think about:

  • How many vehicles or machines need to fit through?
  • Do you need pedestrian access separate from vehicle doors?
  • Any windows for natural light?

4. Consider extras

Lean-tos, mezzanine floors, insulation, skylights, internal walls: these all affect price. You don’t need to decide everything upfront, but flagging them early helps dealers give you a more realistic number.

5. Check if you need council approval

Some sheds are exempt development, others need a DA or CDC. Your dealer can often help, but checking with your local council first saves time later. Key things to confirm:

  • Maximum building size without approval
  • Setback requirements from boundaries
  • Height restrictions

Once you’ve got these sorted, start designing and request your free quotes.
